Nigel Farage has resigned as Member of Parliament for Clacton-on-Sea and will stand in the resulting by-election, framing the contest as a battle for democratic choice against a political establishment he accuses of rigging the system against Reform UK.
Farage Calls By-Election to Challenge Establishment
Writing for the Express, the Reform UK leader said his resignation was a deliberate move to force a by-election after claiming the Labour government, media, and parliamentary committees have conspired to undermine his party. Farage argued that the establishment has changed electoral rules, including introducing votes at 16 and altering donation regulations, specifically to hinder Reform UK's success.
“They have made it increasingly difficult for me to provide the security my family needs, while publishing stories that make that security even more necessary. My home has been attacked. My family has been targeted. And I have had enough!” Farage wrote.
Reform UK's Rise and Establishment Pushback
Farage noted that Reform UK has led in over 350 national opinion polls since his election two years ago, winning former Conservative and Labour strongholds. However, he accused the establishment of fighting back through media smears, parliamentary maneuvers, and attempts to cancel local elections—a move Reform UK successfully challenged in court.
“The bigger we have become, the harder the establishment has fought to stop us,” Farage stated.
Mainstream Parties Refuse to Contest
Farage criticized the Conservatives and Labour for refusing to field candidates in the by-election, calling it “an insult to the people of Clacton.” He claimed the Tories conspired with Labour to cancel local elections and are now “running scared” of the by-election result.
“This vote in a few weeks is about whether ordinary people still have the power to stand up to an establishment that believes it can change the rules whenever it fears losing,” Farage wrote.
By-Election as Referendum on Democracy
Farage framed the by-election as a direct contest between Clacton voters and the entire political establishment, warning that “the future of our democracy depends on who wins.” He urged voters to reject media “lies” and support his mandate to continue the fight against what he described as anti-democratic rule changes.
