Wrestling With Trump: New Doc Explores WWE's Influence on His Politics
Wrestling With Trump: WWE's Influence on His Politics

A new Channel 4 documentary is set to delve into the intriguing relationship between Donald Trump and the world of professional wrestling, exploring how the spectacle of the ring may have shaped his political career. Wrestling With Trump, presented by comedian Munya Chawawa, will see him journey to the United States to uncover the influence of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) on Mr Trump and his political approach.

Wrestling's Impact on Politics

The one-off programme will extend its examination beyond Mr Trump's time in office, scrutinising the enduring impact of using deliberate disbelief for entertainment on American culture and politics. Mr Trump has long been an ardent fan of the sport, having hosted two of its annual WrestleMania events at his Trump Plaza hotel, actively participated in several shows, and maintained a close friendship with former WWE owner Vince McMahon.

Chawawa, 33, will meet wrestling legends such as Brutus Beefcake, real name Edward Harrison Leslie, who will recount his personal connection with Mr Trump, including attending dinners during WrestleMania. Sam Nunberg, a former campaign adviser to Mr Trump, will also offer insights into how the showmanship and theatricality inherent in wrestling have influenced Mr Trump's distinctive political campaigning style.

Key Figures and Concepts

The documentary further features retired wrestler Marc Copani, who will discuss his controversial character, Muhammad Hassan, introduced to the WWE following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Chawawa will also spend time with independent wrestlers, exploring the concept of kayfabe – the audience's intentional suspension of disbelief for entertainment. He will speak with figures like "Handsome" Beau James, who believes this notion has significantly impacted American public life and been exploited by Mr Trump and numerous other political figures.

The programme will address how the blurred lines between performance and reality permeate politics, with Chawawa suggesting that wrestling's influence contributed to Mr Trump's rise to the presidency.

Chawawa's Perspective

Chawawa said: "In 2026, it feels like we're all living under the enormous, eclipsing shadow of Donald Trump. At every moment of every day, we know what he's doing, but so often – we're left asking why. My theory is: wrestling – as in 'sweaty men in tiny hotpants' wrestling. This documentary was the ultimate bittersweet adventure that interprets one of the most contentious men on the planet, through the lens of my fondest childhood nostalgia. It's equal parts crushing and compelling to know the body slams and bombastic smack talk we all enjoyed growing up, may have actually been creating a strategic blueprint for the President of the United States. You have to see it to believe it."

Channel 4's Vision

Shaminder Nahal, Channel 4's head of specialist factual, added: "What's so exciting about this film is the way Munya Chawawa examines Donald Trump through a new and unexpected lens – wrestling – at a time when every day brings dramatic, often shocking world events. With his unique perspective and knowledge, Munya delivers a surprising take on the intersection of politics and popular culture we see today, and in this bold and entertaining film, he uncovers surprising truths about performance, belief and modern political life."

"Wrestling With Trump" is scheduled to air on Channel 4 on Tuesday, May 12, at 10 pm.
