The United States military has conducted a deadly strike on a small motor vessel in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. The US Southern Command (USSC) released chilling footage of the operation, which it described as a "lethal kinetic strike" targeting a boat allegedly engaged in narco-trafficking activities.
Footage Reveals Moment of Impact
Disturbing video shared by the USSC shows the small boat moving rapidly through the water before being engulfed by a blinding light from an explosion. The military command stated that the vessel was "operated by Designated Terrorist Organizations" and was transiting along known drug trafficking routes. However, no concrete evidence was provided to substantiate these claims, and the identities of those on board have not been disclosed.
First Attack Since Maduro's Capture
This strike represents the first known assault on an alleged drug trafficking boat since the kidnapping and arrest of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro. Under the Trump administration, US forces had previously launched more than thirty similar strikes off the coast of South America, resulting in approximately one hundred fatalities. The government has consistently labelled those targeted as "narco-terrorists."
Controversy and Allegations of Civilian Casualties
Despite official assertions, significant controversy surrounds these operations. Critics and some reports suggest that many of the vessels targeted may have been occupied by innocent fishermen rather than criminals. One poignant case involves Alejandro Carranza, a 42-year-old fisherman from La Guajira, near the Colombia-Venezuela border, who set out to sea on September 14 and never returned. His disappearance coincided with a US government announcement of a strike on a suspected drug boat in the Caribbean Sea.
Carranza's family and childhood friend, Leonardo Vega, have vehemently denied the US characterization of him as a narco-terrorist, insisting he was a lifelong fisherman. Vega told Aljazeera, "When I heard Alejandro hadn’t come back, my first thought was that he might have been caught in the bombing." This incident highlights the ongoing debate over the accuracy of intelligence and the potential for civilian casualties in such military actions.
Broader Strategic Focus
The Trump administration has recently shifted considerable attention towards intercepting oil tankers as part of a wider crackdown on the global illegal oil trade. Several tankers have been seized and brought to the United States, with additional sanctions imposed on vessels travelling to and from Venezuela. This maritime strategy forms a key component of the administration's foreign policy and national security objectives in the region.
Following Friday's strike, a search operation was initiated for a possible survivor, underscoring the immediate aftermath of the military action. The USSC, led by Pete Hegseth, cited intelligence as the basis for the operation but has faced calls for greater transparency regarding the evidence supporting its narco-trafficking allegations.
