In a significant diplomatic move, US Interior Secretary Doug Burgum has embarked on a two-day visit to Venezuela, holding high-level talks with acting President Delcy Rodríguez. The discussions centre on establishing secure supply chains for critical minerals, underscoring the Trump administration's intensified efforts to exert influence over Venezuela's vast natural resource sector.
Strategic Engagement in Caracas
Burgum, who also chairs President Donald Trump's National Energy Dominance Council, convened with Rodríguez at the presidential palace in Caracas, accompanied by Laura Dogu, the top US diplomat in Venezuela. This meeting marks the latest in a series of US official visits aimed at reshaping Venezuela's economic landscape following the capture of former President Nicolás Maduro by US forces two months ago.
The US diplomatic mission in Venezuela characterised the visit as "another vital and historic step" supporting a phased plan to revitalise the country. Burgum's itinerary includes engagements with both US and Venezuelan companies, focusing on fostering a legitimate mining sector and ensuring safe critical mineral supply chains.
Broader Geopolitical Context
This development aligns with the Trump administration's recent announcement of plans to form a critical minerals trading bloc with allies, designed to counter China's dominance in supplying essential elements for technologies ranging from fighter jets to smartphones. Venezuela, rich in oil, gold, copper, diamonds, and other precious resources, presents a key opportunity in this strategic initiative.
However, the poorly regulated Venezuelan mining industry is notorious for unsafe working conditions, adding complexity to the negotiations. Prior to his capture, Maduro and his allies accused the US of harbouring intentions to exploit Venezuela's resource wealth, a claim that continues to shadow these diplomatic efforts.
Burgum's trip follows a February visit by Energy Secretary Chris Wright, which primarily addressed Venezuela's oil potential, indicating a coordinated US approach to securing energy and mineral interests in the region.
