This meeting forms a crucial part of Washington's ongoing mediation efforts aimed at advancing a peaceful resolution to the protracted conflict in Ukraine.
High-Level Attendance and Diplomatic Context
Witkoff revealed that the talks were attended by several notable figures, including US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, and White House senior adviser Josh Gruenbaum. While neither party disclosed specific details of the discussions, the envoy expressed encouragement, stating on social media platform X that the meeting indicated Russia is "working toward securing peace in Ukraine."
This diplomatic engagement in the United States occurred just one day prior to the scheduled commencement of a second round of peace talks in Abu Dhabi between Ukrainian and Russian negotiators. These negotiations are centred on a US-backed plan designed to halt the hostilities.
Ukrainian Stance and Presidential Push for Progress
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in his evening address on Saturday, affirmed his nation's readiness to engage in all working formats. He emphasised the critical importance of achieving tangible outcomes from these diplomatic encounters. "It is important that there are results and that the meetings take place," Zelenskyy stated. "We are counting on meetings next week and are preparing for them."
The president also noted that his negotiating team was awaiting further communication from the United States regarding additional meetings. This comes after teams from Ukraine and Russia convened in Abu Dhabi the previous week for their first in-person negotiations on the plan being promoted by former President Donald Trump.
Persistent Challenges and Territorial Stalemate
Despite US assertions that both sides are nearing an agreement, significant hurdles remain. According to sources in Kyiv, a compromise has yet to be found on the pivotal issue of territory within any potential postwar settlement. This continues to be a major sticking point in the peace process.
Energy Crisis and Infrastructure Attacks
Amid these diplomatic manoeuvres, Ukraine faced a severe energy crisis on Saturday. Emergency power cuts swept across several cities, including the capital Kyiv, as well as the Zhytomyr and Kharkiv regions. Neighbouring Moldova also experienced major outages, notably in its capital, Chisinau.
Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal attributed the blackouts to a technical malfunction affecting power lines connecting Ukraine and Moldova. This failure triggered a cascading outage in Ukraine's power grid, activating automatic protection systems. The incident led to water supply cuts in Kyiv and the temporary suspension of the city's subway system due to low network voltage. The state emergency service reported rescuing 500 stranded passengers from metro stations.
Moldova's Energy Minister, Dorin Junghietu, confirmed the disruption was linked to the loss of power lines in Ukraine and urged the public to remain calm until electricity was restored.
Strategic Context and Winter Weaponisation
This large-scale outage follows weeks of relentless Russian strikes targeting Ukraine's already beleaguered energy infrastructure. Moscow's strategy, which Ukrainian officials condemn as "weaponising winter," has sought to deprive civilians of heat, light, and running water during one of the region's harshest winters in years.
In a related development, former President Donald Trump claimed on Thursday that Vladimir Putin had agreed to a one-week pause in strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov later confirmed that Trump had made a "personal request" to Putin to halt targeting Kyiv until Sunday, ostensibly to create favourable conditions for the ongoing negotiations.
President Zelenskyy noted in a social media post that Russia has subsequently shifted its focus to targeting Ukrainian logistics networks. Meanwhile, weather forecasters warn of a brutally cold period extending into the coming week, with temperatures in some areas expected to plummet to as low as -30°C, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
