Pope Leo XIV has appointed three new bishops who have previously criticized the Trump administration or its supporters, intensifying an ongoing feud with the White House. The appointments come amid a series of public disagreements between the pontiff and President Donald Trump over foreign policy and domestic issues.
New Bishops Critical of Trump
The newly appointed bishops include Evelio Menjivar-Ayala, who has spoken out against President Trump's hardline immigration agenda; Robert Boxie III, who condemned attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion programs; and Gary Studniewski, who denounced the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol attack by Trump supporters. These appointments signal the Pope's willingness to elevate clerics who have taken public stances against the administration.
Ongoing Feud with the White House
Pope Leo XIV has openly criticized President Trump's stance on the Iran war, labeling his threat to annihilate Iranian civilization as "truly unacceptable." In response, President Trump has called Leo "weak on crime and terrible for foreign policy." Vice President JD Vance, a Catholic, has publicly advised Pope Leo to exercise caution when discussing theological matters, following the Pope's criticisms of the administration.
Attempts to Downplay Tensions
Despite the public disagreements, both Pope Leo XIV and the Trump administration have attempted to downplay reports of tension. Leo stated it is "not in my interest at all" to debate President Trump, while Vance acknowledged disagreements but emphasized the complexity of the situation. However, the appointment of these three bishops suggests that the rift between the Vatican and the White House remains significant.
The feud has drawn attention from both religious and political observers, with many speculating about its potential impact on U.S.-Vatican relations. The Pope's actions underscore his commitment to social justice issues that often clash with the administration's policies.
