UK Ambassador Says US 'Special Relationship' Is with Israel, Not Britain
UK Ambassador: US Special Relationship Is with Israel

The UK's ambassador to Washington has reportedly stated that America's only 'special relationship' is with 'probably Israel' rather than the United Kingdom. Sir Christian Turner made the comments during a private conversation with visiting British students in February, but they emerged on the second day of King Charles's state visit to the United States.

Ambassador's Remarks

According to a report, Sir Christian said: 'I think there is probably one country that has a special relationship with the United States — and that is probably Israel.' He also described the phrase 'special relationship' as 'quite nostalgic, quite backwards-looking, and with a lot of baggage.' Despite this, he acknowledged that the link between the UK and US is 'so strong,' adding: 'There is a deep history and affinity between us. Particularly on defence and security, we are intertwined.'

Context of the Comments

The remarks were made in mid-February, shortly after Sir Christian replaced Peter Mandelson, who was dismissed over ties to Jeffrey Epstein. The ambassador also expressed surprise that the Epstein scandal had not brought down notable figures in the US, contrasting it with the UK where it affected 'a senior member of the royal family, a British ambassador to Washington, and potentially the prime minister.' He suggested this raised questions about 'different levels of accountability in our systems.'

King Charles's State Visit

The comments have caused discomfort for King Charles, who is currently visiting the White House. During an address, President Donald Trump hailed the 'cherished bond' between the countries, stating: 'We have no closer friend than the British.' Trump added that the relationship would continue 'long into the future.' The visit aims to alleviate recent tensions after the UK refused to join the US-led war on Iran.

Political Implications

Sir Christian also suggested that Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer was 'on the ropes' following the Mandelson appointment and could be removed after May's local elections. The ambassador's unusually outspoken comments risk exacerbating animosity from the Trump administration towards Downing Street.
