The diplomatic relationship between the United States and Denmark has been plunged into a fresh crisis following a provocative move by former President Donald Trump. The appointment of a special envoy to Greenland has ignited a fierce dispute over sovereignty and territorial integrity.
A Controversial Appointment Reopens Old Wounds
On Monday 22 December 2025, the Trump administration announced it had selected Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry to serve as the US Special Envoy to Greenland. This decision has been interpreted by both Danish and Greenlandic authorities as a direct challenge to their national sovereignty. The reaction from Copenhagen and Nuuk was swift and unequivocal.
