Trump Breaks Silence on Counterterrorism Official's Resignation Over Iran Stance

Former US President Donald Trump has broken his silence following the resignation of a senior counterterrorism official, delivering a pointed critique of the individual's stance on Iran. The development comes after the official, Joe Kent, stepped down from his position, prompting Trump to publicly address the matter for the first time.

Trump's Critique of Security Stance

In his remarks, Trump described Joe Kent as a "nice guy" but asserted he was "weak on security". The former president elaborated on his criticism by referencing Kent's statement regarding Iran. "When I read the statement I realised that it's a good thing that he's out, because he said Iran was not a threat," Trump stated.

Trump strongly contested this viewpoint, emphasising his belief in Iran's significant threat level. "Iran was a threat, every country realised what a threat Iran was, the question is whether or not they wanted to do something about it," he added, framing the issue as one of global recognition and action.

Rejection of Dissenting Views

The former president made it clear that he views such perspectives as unacceptable within security circles. "When somebody 'working with us' says they did not think Iran was a threat, 'we don't want those people'," Trump declared. He further characterised individuals holding such views as "not smart people" and "not savvy people", while reiterating his description of Iran as a "tremendous threat".

This public commentary marks Trump's first reaction to the official's departure, highlighting ongoing debates about national security priorities and threat assessments within US counterterrorism frameworks. The resignation and subsequent response underscore persistent divisions in how Iran's regional influence and activities are perceived by different factions.
