Rapper Tinie Tempah made a lighthearted plea to King Charles for an invitation to visit his royal lands during a vibrant reception honouring the United Kingdom's Nigerian diaspora. The event, held at St James's Palace on Wednesday, brought together hundreds of guests ahead of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's upcoming state visit.
A Royal Gathering for Nigerian Culture
King Charles, appearing in excellent spirits, mingled with attendees including military personnel, representatives from the King's Trust and Commonwealth Secretariat, alongside prominent influencers and fashion designers. The monarch, who has visited Nigeria four times previously in 1990, 1999, 2006 and 2018 during his tenure as Prince of Wales, engaged warmly with the enthusiastic crowd.
Tinie Tempah's Farm Inspiration
When greeting the King, Tinie Tempah expressed being "inspired" by Charles "getting his hands dirty" in his environmental documentary about the Duchy of Cornwall. "Invite me, invite me," the rapper joked as the King discussed the royal lands with him. Speaking later to the Press Association, Tempah elaborated: "I was inspired by the King because I always wanted to have a farm, so when I saw that the big man himself is getting his hands dirty..."
Fashion, Diplomacy and Celebrations
The King conversed with designers from Brand63 Africa, a social enterprise launched at London Fashion Week this year that connects fashion designers of African heritage to the global luxury market. He also met UK Minister for Trade Sir Chris Bryant, Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar, and beauty influencer Patricia Bright.
Two women wearing matching orange and black ensembles with blue head-dresses were overheard excitedly referring to Charles as "Uncle Charles," reflecting the warm atmosphere. Music for the occasion was provided by Dele Sosimi and the Afrobeats Orchestra, whom the King spoke with as he departed. When the band mentioned they last performed at a similar event nine years prior, Charles quipped: "none of you look a day older."
State Visit Preparations and Culinary Moments
Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu are scheduled to visit on March 18-19, where they will be guests of the King. Charles and Camilla will host them at Windsor Castle, marking the first UK state visit by a Nigerian president in 37 years, following previous visits in 1973, 1981 and 1989.
When asked by the band if he had sampled any Jollof rice, a traditional Nigerian dish served at the event, Charles laughed and declined: "No, I couldn't possibly eat and speak at the same time." The reception showcased the strong cultural ties and diplomatic relations between the UK and Nigeria, with King Charles at the centre of the celebratory proceedings.
