Theatrical World Gathers to Mourn Producer Robert Fox at London Funeral
The illustrious Fox and Redgrave acting dynasties united at All Saints Church in Fulham on Thursday for the funeral of distinguished producer Robert Fox. The celebrated producer, whose work helped inspire the hit Netflix drama The Crown, passed away from prostate cancer on March 20 at the age of 73.
A Planned Departure
His death was confirmed by his wife, Fiona Golfar, who revealed to Deadline Hollywood that her husband passed away 'in exactly the way he planned: at home looking out to his flower-filled garden surrounded by his wife and five children on a glorious spring afternoon.' She poignantly described it as 'the epitome of an elegant Robert Fox production.'
A Star-Studded Gathering
Approximately 300 guests attended the solemn service in west London, with numerous famous faces from stage and screen paying their respects. His nephew, actor Freddie Fox, 37, arrived wearing a black suit and dark sunglasses. Robert's former stepmother, legendary actress Vanessa Redgrave, 89, and her daughter Joely Richardson, 61, were seen making their way to the church, maintaining composed expressions.
The producer was previously married to Natasha Richardson, Vanessa's daughter, from 1990 to 1992. Notable attendees included Gillian Anderson, who arrived by cab dressed in a smart black jumpsuit, and Nigella Lawson, who attended with her daughter, Cosmina Thomasina Diamond. Robert's niece, Lydia Fox, was accompanied by her husband, comedian and actor Richard Ayoade, who offered comfort with his arm around her.
Industry Colleagues Pay Respects
Long-time professional associate Bill Nighy arrived in a navy blue suit, holding a funeral program. Other industry figures present included Tania Bryer, Andy Harries, Frank Marshall, Matthew Byam Shaw, Rose Uniacke, and Rosie Fellner. The gathering represented the breadth of Fox's connections across British theatre and film.
A Theatrical Legacy
Born in West Sussex, Robert Fox was the youngest son of theatrical agent Robin Fox and actress Angela Worthington. He was part of the renowned Fox acting family, with his elder brothers Edward Fox and James Fox both being BAFTA award-winning performers. He was also uncle to a new generation of actors, including Emilia Fox of Silent Witness, Freddie Fox from House of the Dragon, and Laurence Fox, the actor-turned-political activist.
Four Decades of Production Excellence
Over more than four decades, Robert Fox carved out an exceptional reputation as both a film and theatrical producer in London's West End and on Broadway. Through his company, Robert Fox Ltd, he produced or co-produced over 50 productions, including Chess and Lazarus.
Among his most celebrated successes was The Audience, a play about Queen Elizabeth II starring Helen Mirren. This production directly inspired the creation of Netflix's The Crown, which starred Claire Foy and later won a Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series - Drama. Fox served as an Executive Producer on the acclaimed series.
Collaborations with Icons
Throughout his career, Fox moved effortlessly among the upper echelons of stage and screen. A close friend of David Bowie, he was among the few entrusted with the singer's cancer diagnosis before Bowie's death from liver cancer in 2016. The pair first met in London in 1974, with Fox later describing Bowie to The Telegraph as 'easy to chat to,' and not 'ostentatious or loud or attention seeking.' They collaborated on Lazarus, with Fox producing and Bowie co-writing alongside playwright Enda Walsh.
Fox also worked with some of the greatest acting talents of his generation, including Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, and Vanessa Redgrave. He produced Notes on a Scandal, starring Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett, and praised Dench's 'democratic attitude' for setting the film's tone. He produced major stage works for Maggie Smith, including Lettice and Lovage and The Breath of Life, and famously produced A Month by the Lake, starring Vanessa Redgrave and his brother, Edward.
Heartfelt Tributes from the Industry
Following news of his death, heartfelt tributes have poured in from the theatrical world. Hugh Jackman, who starred in The Boy from Oz - produced by Robert Fox - wrote on social media platform X: 'Robert Fox was an integral part of my life, both personally and professionally. He was an exceptional father and husband. He had the unique ability to make everyone feel seen and heard. Robert gave of himself and expected nothing in return. Robert was a role model. A supportive force to all who knew and loved him. His extraordinary career spanned decades. That's because Robert was one of one.'
The funeral service in Fulham served as a fitting testament to a man whose life and work touched so many across the entertainment industry, leaving behind a legacy of elegance, collaboration, and profound artistic contribution.
