The Last of Us Recasts Role for Season 3 After Actor Quits

The Last of Us Undergoes Major Cast Change for Third Season

HBO's critically acclaimed post-apocalyptic drama The Last of Us has announced a significant recasting for its forthcoming third season. Danny Ramirez, who portrayed the character Manny in season two, has departed the series due to scheduling conflicts, with Jorge Lendeborg Jr. stepping into the role.

Why Danny Ramirez Left the Hit Series

Ramirez's exit from The Last of Us stems from prior commitments to other high-profile projects. The actor will instead focus on filming De Noche, a romance drama directed by Todd Haynes. This production was previously delayed when Joaquin Phoenix withdrew just days before shooting in August 2024. In a notable coincidence, Ramirez's former co-star Pedro Pascal has taken over the lead role originally intended for Phoenix.

Additionally, Ramirez is set to reprise his role as Joaquin Torres in Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release in December 2026, following his appearance in Captain America: Brave New World.

Jorge Lendeborg Jr. Steps Into the Role of Manny

Lendeborg Jr., known for roles in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Love, Simon, and Bumblebee, will now play Manny, a member of the Washington Liberation Front (WLF). This group assisted Abby, portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever, in tracking down Ellie's mentor Joel, played by Pedro Pascal, whom she blamed for her father's death.

The recasting comes as season three shifts its narrative focus from Ellie, played by Bella Ramsey, to Abby's perspective, meaning Manny's character will have an expanded and more prominent role in the upcoming episodes.

New Additions and Returning Cast Members

Season three will also introduce Clea DuVall as a member of the Seraphites, a violent faction known for sacrificing enemies in disturbing rituals. DuVall brings an impressive television pedigree, having appeared in series such as Carnivale, Better Call Saul, Veep, and The Handmaid's Tale.

Returning cast members for the new season include:

  • Bella Ramsey as Ellie
  • Isabela Merced as Dina
  • Gabriel Luna as Tommy
  • Jeffrey Wright as Isaac

Production Details and Future of the Series

The Last of Us, co-created by Craig Mazin of Chernobyl fame and Neil Druckmann, the visionary behind the original hit video game, is currently in production for its third season, slated for release in 2027.

Regarding the show's longevity, HBO president Casey Bloys recently commented to Deadline, stating, "It certainly seems that way, but on decisions like that, we will defer to the showrunners. So you can ask them." This suggests that season three could potentially mark the conclusion of the series, though no official confirmation has been provided.

The series, based on the popular video game franchise, depicts a society devastated by a mass fungal infection that transforms humans into zombie-like creatures, exploring themes of survival, loyalty, and redemption in a brutal, post-apocalyptic world.
