Teddi Mellencamp experienced intense nerves as she prepared to sing a cover of her father John Mellencamp's iconic hit song 'Jack & Diane' during Wednesday's episode of The Masked Singer. The 44-year-old reality television star, often labelled a 'nepo baby', was visibly trembling before her performance, which she described as getting 'nice and embarrassed' in front of the audience and her famous father.
A Supportive Father's Presence
Ensuring she had moral support, Teddi made certain that her 74-year-old father, the Grammy-winning heartland rocker John Mellencamp, was seated right beside her on the couch to witness the event. John humorously claimed he had flown all the way from Indiana specifically for the performance, prompting Teddi to laugh and retort, 'Lies!' His presence was a poignant moment, given the song's significance in launching his four-decade career after it topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for four weeks in 1982.
Fatherly Advice and Emotional Performance
Prior to taking the stage, John offered his daughter straightforward advice. 'He's like, "Don't go out there trying to think that you're a singer. Just go out there and sing the song the way you would if you were singing along. Have fun,"' Teddi recounted to Us Weekly. She elaborated further, sharing, 'My dad said, "Just sing loud and proud, and if you don't hit a note, you don't hit a note, but as long as you're giving it your all, that's what matters." And so that's what I was doing.'
Despite her efforts, Teddi was ultimately eliminated and unmasked as the Calla Lily character on the Fox celebrity singing competition. The performance was not her only musical moment on the show; for the January 14 episode, she sang a cover of Rachel Platten's 2015 anthem 'Fight Song', a choice deeply inspired by her personal battle with stage IV cancer.
Inspiring Cancer Battle and Family Focus
Reflecting on her performance of 'Fight Song', Teddi became emotional. 'I'm probably even going to get emotional talking about it,' the Two Ts in a Pod podcast host confessed. 'I'm almost a year [after] having all my cancer surgeries, but it's been a fight, and I wanted to be able to share the softer side, but also [show] you can work really hard and do the things that you want to do still.'
In a positive health update, Teddi revealed on her podcast in October that there was 'no detectable cancer' in her body, though she continues with another year of immunotherapy treatments. Her decision to participate in The Masked Singer was primarily driven by her children, for whom the show is a favourite. Interestingly, her children quickly identified her voice despite the disguise. 'They were like, "Don't even try to fool us. We know,"' Teddi recalled with amusement.
Personal Life and Supportive Friends
Teddi's personal life remains complex. She and her estranged husband, Edwin Arroyave, the 48-year-old CEO of Skyline Security, have paused their divorce proceedings due to her health issues. They continue to cohabit in their $6.5 million marital home in Encino, focusing on their three children: daughter Slate, 13; son Cruz, 11; and daughter Dove, nearly six, as well as Arroyave's 17-year-old daughter Bella from a previous relationship.
Their 13-year marriage reportedly faced challenges, including rumours of an affair between Teddi and her horse trainer, Simon Schröder, while his wife was pregnant. Teddi addressed this indirectly, stating on The Jamie Kern Lima Show, 'I've never talked about it at all, just because of the kids... did I do things that hurt other people? Yes.' She added reflectively, 'To this day, does it still hurt my heart and I wonder if that's why I got cancer? Yes, like it was my payback...nothing goes without payment.'
Following her Masked Singer appearance, Teddi received an outpouring of support from friends and colleagues in the entertainment industry. Her close friend Kyle Richards commented on Instagram, 'I can't believe you were able to do this with everything you are going through! Proud of you Ted.' Co-host Tamra Judge praised, 'You crushed it. So proud of you my TWOT!' and Tori Spelling simply posted, 'Yasssss!' Additional supportive messages came from various Real Housewives alumni and other celebrities, highlighting the community rallying around her during this period.
