Tasha Ghouri Embarks on Personal Journey to Uncover Pakistani Heritage
Reality television personality Tasha Ghouri, known for appearances on Love Island and Strictly Come Dancing, is delving into her family's past through a new documentary project. The 27-year-old star, recently featured in BBC Two's Pilgrimage series, has been inspired to trace her Pakistani roots alongside her father, Tarek.
Documentary Plans Revealed Amid Family Discovery
In an exclusive interview, Ghouri confirmed that a documentary is currently in development, aiming to explore her heritage in South Asia. She admitted that she and her father have "never really spoken" about their Pakistani background, making this journey particularly significant. "It's something I really want to explore and share that journey with people as well," Ghouri stated, highlighting her hope to connect with others in similar situations.
The decision to pursue this project emerged after discovering old family letters and black-and-white photographs at home, sparking curiosity about relatives in Pakistan. Ghouri revealed that her grandfather immigrated from Pakistan as a young man, marrying a British woman and raising a family in the UK. However, contact with his practising Muslim relatives in Pakistan has been lost over time.
Overcoming Embarrassment and Seeking Identity
Ghouri expressed feelings of embarrassment about her limited knowledge of her heritage, noting that she often struggles to answer questions about her surname's origins. "I want to be able to say to my future kids, 'This is the family history and this is who you are,'" she explained, emphasizing the documentary's personal importance. The project aims to reconnect with distant family members and uncover stories obscured by past family politics.
While a production company is lined up, further details about the documentary's release remain unconfirmed. Ghouri's participation in Pilgrimage, which featured celebrities like Patsy Kensit and Ashley Banjo trekking across North Yorkshire, County Durham, and Northumberland, provided the catalyst for this deeper exploration.
Reflections on Ableism and Personal Growth
In related revelations, Ghouri opened up about the lasting impact of ableism she faced during her time on Love Island. Born completely deaf and receiving a cochlear implant at age five, she described how critics used her disability as a point of attack. "It still gets to me now," Ghouri admitted, recalling the emotional toll on her family.
Her career has seen significant highs and lows, from reaching the Strictly Come Dancing final with partner Aljaz Skorjanec to navigating a public breakup with former Love Island partner Andrew Le Page. Ghouri is now in a relationship with BBC presenter Cam Whitnall, having moved forward from past controversies.
Through her documentary and public discussions, Ghouri hopes to foster greater understanding and dialogue about heritage, disability, and personal identity, turning her experiences into a source of empowerment for others.
