Strictly Stars Discuss Initial Partnership Doubts and Transformative Journey
Strictly Come Dancing professional Carlos Gu has candidly revealed the significant doubts he experienced upon first being paired with his celebrity partner, former footballer Karen Carney, during last year's series. The duo, who eventually triumphed to win the coveted Glitterball trophy, initially questioned whether their partnership would succeed due to their apparent differences.
Overcoming Initial Uncertainty
Speaking on the White Wine Question Time podcast with host Kate Thornton, Carlos, 33, described his dramatic comeback after failing to secure a partner the previous year. He admitted that when producers first partnered him with Karen, 38, he was uncertain about their compatibility. "The first time we paired up I was like 'I have no idea how this is going to work and where we're going to end up, but I'm willing to take an adventure, a challenge'," Carlos explained. "I think she thought exactly the same."
Karen has echoed these sentiments, recalling their awkward first meeting at a London event. "When we first met we had nothing in common. Nothing... I sat in silence for 10 minutes thinking, 'I don't know what to do here,'" she confessed. However, she added that this initial impression proved misleading: "But the more I got to know him, that's not who Carlos is."
Emotional Growth and Personal Transformation
Carlos has also opened up about his personal evolution during this decade, emphasizing the importance of emotional expression. In an interview with the Mirror, he discussed why he comes across as an emotional person. "I'm just an emotional person," Carlos stated. "I think we should all be able to express our emotions freely, whether you're a man or a woman – especially men. Men need to cry more. Also, facing your own lack of confidence, accepting who you are is important."
This emotional honesty appears to have been a crucial element in their partnership's success, with both stars embracing vulnerability as part of their journey.
Health Challenges and Sensory Sensitivities
Karen has spoken openly about her health battles since winning Strictly, including living with Scheuermann's disease, a spinal condition that affects posture. Additionally, she has suggested that both she and Carlos may be on the autism spectrum, a realization that emerged during their time on the show.
She recalled a specific moment during their salsa routine when the lighting became overwhelming. "For the salsa, the lighting was too much for both me and Carlos," Karen explained. "We're probably on a spectrum - I am - so a lot of lights, not good. So they lowered the lighting system and tried to make it a little bit better for us to perform."
This shared sensitivity created an unexpected bond between the partners, helping them understand each other's needs and working styles more deeply.
The Power of Embracing Challenges
Despite their initial reservations, both Carlos and Karen credit their willingness to embrace challenges as key to their eventual victory. Carlos emphasized that their shared attitude toward difficulty became a unifying force. Their partnership demonstrates how apparent differences can transform into strengths when approached with openness and determination.
Karen reflected on how her perception of Carlos changed dramatically throughout their journey. "I never thought when I started, he is someone who would turn out to be so special and important to me," she admitted, highlighting the profound personal connection that developed beyond their professional collaboration.
The Strictly winners' story serves as a powerful reminder that successful partnerships often emerge from unlikely beginnings, requiring patience, emotional honesty, and a willingness to navigate challenges together.
