Sony CEO Slams Trump's Racist Obama Video as 'Despicable'

In a rare and forceful public statement, Tom Rothman, the Chair and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, has condemned a racist video posted by former US President Donald Trump as "despicable." The intervention occurred during the African American Film Critics Association awards ceremony, where Rothman accepted the Impact award on behalf of the studio.

Rothman's Strong Condemnation at Awards Event

The Hollywood Reporter first reported Rothman's remarks, made while he was speaking at the prestigious ceremony. Sony Pictures was being honored for its groundbreaking commitment to mainstream black cinema, with notable films including Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, Stir Crazy, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

In his speech, Rothman directly addressed the controversial video, stating, "I was thinking ... that in the face of the regressive and despicable video that we were subject to last week – from the leader of the free world no less – that stories like these remain ever more urgent and important."

Context of the Racist Video and Its Aftermath

The video in question, which depicted former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama as cartoon apes, was posted on Trump's Truth Social platform. It sparked widespread outrage across the political spectrum before being deleted. Trump later blamed aides for not reviewing the content prior to posting.

Prior to its removal, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the video, describing it as an internet meme inspired by The Jungle Book and The Lion King. However, critics have widely denounced it as a blatantly racist portrayal.

Rothman's Humble Acceptance and Studio Pride

During his acceptance speech, Rothman also expressed humility, noting, "It feels kind of silly for the old white dude to be standing up here accepting this award as it belongs to all the people at the motion picture group – one that I'm very proud to say is a diverse and inclusive group."

He extended gratitude to the creators who trust Sony with their stories and to global audiences, emphasizing the studio's dedication to fostering diverse narratives in cinema.
