Pope Leo XIV has reportedly decided against visiting the United States for the remainder of Donald Trump's presidential term, marking a significant diplomatic rift. Instead, the pontiff will travel to Lampedusa on July 4th to meet with African migrants, bypassing the US's 250th anniversary celebrations entirely.
Tensions Over Iran and Defence Policies
The decision follows a contentious meeting between a Vatican official and the Pentagon, where the Pope's January address was criticised as hostile to Trump's policies, notably the "Donroe Doctrine." Although a War Department official denied the meeting was confrontational, Pope Leo has publicly defied Trump by condemning his threats against Iran and endorsing a ceasefire.
Challenges to US Defence Integration
Further escalating tensions, the Pope has challenged Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's integration of militant Christianity into his official role. In a bold statement, Pope Leo asserted that Jesus rejects prayers from those who wage war, directly opposing Hegseth's approach.
This stance underscores the Pope's role as a powerful critic of Trump's war in Iran, highlighting ongoing conflicts between Vatican diplomacy and US foreign policy under the current administration.
