Munich Security Conference Concludes With Lingering Global Questions
The annual Munich Security Conference, a pivotal forum for world leaders, politicians, and journalists, has disbanded for another year. This gathering, held in Germany, has historically shaped global politics through seismic speeches and debates. From the 2003 Iraq spat among NATO allies to Vladimir Putin's 2007 address heralding a new cold war, and JD Vance's 2025 attack on European nations, each moment has left a lasting impact. As the dust settles on this year's event, several critical questions emerge regarding Europe's role, US relations, and ongoing conflicts.
Will Europe 'Wake Up' to a Changing World?
European leaders entered this year's conference with a sense of urgency, spurred by past criticisms from US officials. French President Emmanuel Macron emphasised the need for Europe to awaken, stating it was time for a new independent path. Alongside German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, he advocated for maintaining alliances with Washington while exploring a European nuclear deterrent. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called for closer defence ties with Europe, distancing from Brexit-era policies, and stressed that this would not weaken UK-US or NATO relationships.
Can the US and Europe Remain United?
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio struck a conciliatory tone compared to previous years, affirming deep ties between the US and Europe. He expressed a preference for collaboration but noted the US was prepared to act alone if necessary. This came amid a YouGov poll showing record-low favourability towards the US in Europe. Chancellor Merz highlighted a growing rift, criticising US culture wars and protectionism, while EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas condemned euro-bashing, asserting European values remain highly regarded globally.
Does Trump Still Want Greenland?
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland's leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen held a constructive meeting with Rubio, but Frederiksen later expressed doubts that Trump's desire for Greenland had faded. She noted ongoing pressure on the island's people as unacceptable. A US-Denmark-Greenland working group has been formed to address Arctic security concerns, yet tensions persist over sovereignty and threats.
Is Peace in Ukraine Any Closer?
Rubio skipped a Ukraine-focused meeting but met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines. Zelenskyy emphasised Ukraine's efforts to end the war, calling for security guarantees from the US for at least 20 years and a clear EU membership date. He criticised discussions of concessions focused solely on Ukraine, ahead of a trilateral meeting hosted by the US.
Which Future Democratic Hopefuls Were There?
The conference served as a platform for potential US presidential candidates, with Democrats like California Governor Gavin Newsom, Arizona Senator Ruben Gallego, and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer attending. New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez drew significant attention, outlining an alternative leftwing foreign policy and accusing Trump of undermining transatlantic alliances. She questioned unconditional military aid to Israel, suggesting a reassessment is needed.
