Kim Jong-un Grins at Women's Spa in 'North Korean Benidorm'

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has been pictured with a broad grin on his face as he peered over a women's spa pool during a visit to a newly reopened resort, described as the 'North Korean Benidorm'. The Supreme Leader attended the official opening of the Onpo Workers' Recreation Centre in North Hamgyong Province, where he cut the ribbon and inspected the facilities, all while keeping his large winter coat on indoors.

Resort Transformation After Harsh Criticism

The hot spring spa underwent a complete remodelling following severe criticism from Kim Jong-un back in 2018. At that time, he condemned the site for poor management and 'shabby' facilities, famously comparing it to being 'worse than a fish tank'. During the opening ceremony, Kim reflected on his previous visit, stating, 'I remember when I visited here a few years ago… and severely criticised the uncultured and unhygienic management practices.'

Pride in Renovation Efforts

Kim expressed pride in the transformation, noting that the holiday camp has been rebuilt into an excellent rest facility for the people. He praised the practical and harmonious arrangement of every section, with architectural elements designed to blend seamlessly with the surrounding natural environment. 'Seeing this holiday camp, now rebuilt as an excellent rest facility for the people, fills me with pride that we have accomplished another meaningful task,' he said.

Targeting International Tourism

The Onpo Workers' Recreation Centre is being marketed to foreign tourists, particularly from China and sanctions-hit Russia, as part of North Korea's efforts to boost tourism revenue. Prices for a week-long tour range between $1,000 (£743) to $1,350 (£1,000), excluding flights, making it accessible primarily to the ruling class and affluent international visitors.

Inspection and Future Plans

During his visit, Kim Jong-un inspected various areas of the resort, including treatment rooms and information boards, despite the steamy conditions of the spa pools. He has ordered officials to prepare for a full opening next month, ensuring the site is ready to welcome guests. The photographs released by North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency show Kim smiling as he looks over the pool, maintaining his coat throughout the tour in a wintry setting.

This event highlights North Korea's ongoing focus on developing leisure facilities, even as it faces international sanctions and economic challenges. The resort's revival from criticism to a praised destination underscores Kim's direct involvement in state projects and his emphasis on presenting a positive image both domestically and to select foreign audiences.
