Kaley Cuoco Reflects on Joining Charmed's Final Season
Kaley Cuoco has opened up about one of the most daunting moments of her early acting career during a recent podcast appearance. The actress, now 40, shared vivid memories of stepping into the eighth and final season of the supernatural drama Charmed at just 21 years old.
A Daunting First Day on Set
During an episode of Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert podcast, Cuoco described how her introduction to the show was far from casual. Her first day coincided with the official gallery shoot for the new season, an all-day event involving promotional photos with the entire cast.
'I was 21 when I joined because I remember I turned 21 on that set,' Cuoco recalled. 'Can you imagine? If I knew what I knew now, I don't think I would have ever let this happen.'
The actress explained she was joining established stars Alyssa Milano, Rose McGowan, and Holly Marie Combs, whom she had never met before. 'I'm the new girl. You've got these iconic actresses. I'm joining their family photo and I'm 21,' she said, describing the overwhelming nature of the situation.
Contrasting Receptions from Co-Stars
Despite joking that she was 'the hottest I've ever been' and 'thinking I'm like the coolest thing ever,' Cuoco admitted she was simultaneously 'terrified.' Her anxiety peaked when she arrived during the cast's lunch break to find them eating in corners of the gallery.
That's when Alyssa Milano made a lasting impression. 'I walk in. Alyssa Milano sees me and I will always tell this story about her. She got up, ran over to me, welcomed me to the show, and gave me the biggest hug in the world,' Cuoco shared. 'She was so kind. I will never forget that.'
However, not every interaction was as warm. Regarding Rose McGowan, Cuoco said: 'Rose maybe not as happy. I don't know. I still don't know if she liked me. But Alyssa was amazing.'
Lasting Impact on Her Professional Approach
Cuoco noted that joining a long-running series midstream felt deeply awkward. 'It's walking into someone's family dinner. It's so weird,' she explained, referencing how she joined in the eighth year of a show where the cast had established close bonds.
That experience profoundly shaped how she treats newcomers on her own sets, particularly during her 12-season run on The Big Bang Theory. 'That was the nicest thing she could have ever done for me,' Cuoco said of Milano's welcome. 'In fact, ever since then, I make sure I do that to anybody. You've got to go the extra mile in a situation like that.'
She continued: 'I think about that with Big Bang. We were on that show for 12 years. Anyone that came in, I was very aware that this must be so weird for you. I always remembered that from Alyssa.'
Broader Reflections on the Charmed Experience
Cuoco ultimately joined Charmed in 2005 as Billie Jenkins for its final season. The series originally premiered in October 1998 on The WB, following three magical sisters navigating supernatural threats. Milano starred alongside Holly Marie Combs and Shannen Doherty initially, with McGowan joining in Season 4 as Paige Matthews.
Reflecting more broadly on her time on the show, Cuoco admitted it was 'intense and difficult.' She said: 'I came into Charmed really not thinking anything other than I got this cool job. But it caused a few more waves than I imagined.'
The actress emphasized how the experience taught her to be understanding of newcomers in any professional setting. 'There were a few people on that show that were wonderful to me, and there were a few people that weren't. I remember them both very clearly,' she revealed.
'I've been doing this my whole life, and I have had very few experiences that weren't the best, but I remember thinking: I will always make sure every single person feels like they're part of the group,' Cuoco concluded. 'Because there's nothing worse than feeling outside of it, especially on a set when everyone is cliquey and has been together for so long.'
