Hollyoaks Legend James Sutton Sheds Real Tears in Emotional Farewell After Two Decades

When Hollyoaks icon James Sutton filmed his poignant goodbye as John Paul McQueen, he cried genuine tears, marking the end of a 20-year chapter in his life. The 43-year-old actor made the decision to leave the soap at the start of last year, driven by frustration as his character's screen time dwindled. Now, in an exclusive interview, he reveals he is in the best physical and mental shape of his life, having shifted focus to his well-being and fitness.

Frustration and a Bold New Direction

James explained, 'The show has changed significantly over the last couple of years, moving to three shorter episodes and telling stories in different ways. As someone who has been acting since I was eight, if I'm employed as an actor and not acting, it became frustrating. I reached a point where I thought, if I don't act now, another five years would pass in a blink.' He added, 'I'm 43 now and want to be active and creative, not waiting around. I needed to take back control of my life.'

In 2024, brutal budget cuts at Channel 4 led to Hollyoaks being reduced from five episodes per week to three shorter 20-minute episodes, with a shift to digital-first viewing. This cost-cutting measure resulted in the loss of 130 jobs at the Liverpool-based soap, which celebrated its 30th anniversary last October. James reflected, 'So many crew members had been there for years, making it an awful time. I feel like a lot of the heart of the show was ripped out. The crew, many local and some since Brookside days, were heartbreaking to lose. Scousers are hilarious, warm, and talented, and the energy has never recovered.'

Legacy and Impact of John Paul McQueen

One of James' most memorable storylines involved John Paul coming out as gay after developing feelings for his best friend Craig Dean, which aired in early 2007. He shared, 'There's a whole generation of men in their 30s and 40s who came out because of John Paul's storyline. It was the first time they saw someone on TV at half-past-six, sitting with family, thinking, that's me. That legacy will live on. To impact one person is amazing, but to affect a whole generation of LGBTQ+ people is truly special.'

James emphasized his gratitude, saying, 'The community has always been supportive. As a straight white man, you have to be invited in to speak on their behalf, so being a figurehead on television is a beautiful thing I don't take for granted.'

Launching Protocol and Personal Transformation

After announcing his departure last year, James saw out his contract, which ended in January. He used the time productively, stating, 'They gave me the gift of time. All those days I wasn't filming, I got into the best shape of my life. I started writing again, launched my platform, and realized how much I missed being creative and of service. I'm now in the best place I've ever been.'

His main focus is now Protocol, an online platform he launched last year. James described it as 'an adult reset system for people who feel stuck, struggling, or lacking direction. It's based on lived experience, about stepping up to be your best self, building self-trust through small daily promises that compound. I publish a weekly letter and long-form content, and I'm looking to expand into TED talks and corporate events.'

He admitted that his transformation began during COVID, saying, 'I was a mess during COVID—drinking too much, not a good friend or husband. I had no direction.' After splitting from his wife Rachael Collin in 2023, he is now happily single and focused on himself, adding, 'I wake up happy and grateful, fulfilled by Protocol, writing, and being creative. Helping people is a huge part of that.'

Cheeky Side and Final Scenes

In a lighter turn, James has joined the subscription site subs.com, showing off his newfound body confidence. He said, 'I've never felt proud of how I looked or had body confidence. In Hollyoaks, I rarely had my top off—maybe twice in 20 years. Now I feel proud, so why not join a platform like subs? It's a bit cheeky and part of who I am now. Protocol is for structure, and if you want to see me in my pants, subscribe to @thejamessutton on subs.com. It's fun to feel sexy!'

In his final Hollyoaks episode, John Paul leaves the village after emotional goodbyes to his mum Myra, sister Mercedes, and cousin Theresa. James recalled, 'It was great to have Gemma Merna, Leah Hackett, Hollie-Jay Bowes, Annie Wallace, and David Tag return for a special scene. I wish we had more time, but it was one of the best days on set.' On filming his last scene, he revealed, 'John Paul was crying, but they're James' tears. I've spent my adult life at Hollyoaks, and leaving people I love was really sad.' He was presented with flowers and a Hollyoaks sign, though there was no big leaving do due to it being early January.

James concluded, 'Now, I'm focused on the future and excited about what's next.' For more on Protocol, where he writes about structure and direction, visit his website.
