Jake Gyllenhaal Discovers Heartfelt Note from Sister Maggie on Late Show Couch

In a heartwarming moment on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, actor Jake Gyllenhaal received a surprise note from his older sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal, tucked into the couch cushion. The incident occurred during Jake's Monday appearance to promote their new collaborative film, The Bride!, where Jake stars and Maggie directs.

A Sweet Sibling Surprise

At the conclusion of the interview, host Stephen Colbert informed Jake, 45, that Maggie, 48, had left a piece of paper for him during her own visit the previous night. As the Oscar-nominated actor unfolded the note, he discovered a simple yet powerful message: "You're a beast."

Jake explained the meaningful backstory behind these three words. He revealed that he originally wrote the phrase on Maggie's dressing room mirror before one of her Broadway performances when she was facing difficulties. Since then, it has become a cherished tradition for the siblings to leave this motivational message on each other's mirrors before significant events.

"She's written it on my mirror every opening night," Jake shared, referencing his own Broadway experience starring as Iago in the 2025 revival of Othello alongside Denzel Washington at the Barrymore Theatre.

The Bride! and Sibling Collaboration

The note exchange comes as the Gyllenhaal siblings promote The Bride!, a horror sci-fi film scheduled for theatrical release on March 6. The movie features Jessie Buckley as a murdered 1930s Chicago woman resurrected by a groundbreaking scientist (Annette Bening) to become the wife of Frankenstein's monster (Christian Bale). The cast also includes Jake, Penélope Cruz, and Maggie's husband, Peter Sarsgaard.

While Maggie and Jake have previously co-starred in films like A Dangerous Woman (1993), Homegrown (1998), and Donnie Darko (2001), The Bride! marks their first collaboration with Maggie as director and Jake as actor. This project represents Maggie's second directorial effort following her 2021 debut, The Lost Daughter, a psychological drama starring Olivia Colman.

Evolving Sibling Relationship

In a recent interview with The New York Times, Maggie opened up about her evolving relationship with her younger brother. "We've never been estranged," she stated, "but we've never been as close as we are now. We're finally, maybe in the last five years, more and more and more, even each day, really interacting, which is hard for people to do."

Maggie also reflected on the early dynamics of their careers, acknowledging that Jake's rapid rise to stardom initially sparked feelings of envy. "In general, I am very interested in envy," she mused. "What creates it? I think it's usually feeling starving, like you don't have enough."

However, she emphasized that perspective has changed over time. "There absolutely is enough to go around. But I don't think I knew that at first, when I was young and Jake was a movie star right away. I don't think I was in touch with the envy, but it was there."

The heartfelt note exchange on The Late Show serves as a touching testament to the siblings' supportive bond, blending personal tradition with professional collaboration as they embark on this new cinematic venture together.
