Hungary has summoned the Russian ambassador, Evgeny Stanislavov, to the foreign ministry in Budapest following a massive drone attack near Hungary's border with Ukraine. The strike hit the Ukrainian region of Transcarpathia, which is home to a sizable Hungarian minority.
Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced the summons on Wednesday, condemning the attack. 'The Hungarian government strongly condemns the Russian attack on Transcarpathia,' he said. Magyar added that the foreign minister would ask for information on when Russia plans to end the war.
Russia fired at least 800 drones in a daytime barrage on Wednesday, targeting about 20 regions of Ukraine, including Transcarpathia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported at least six deaths and dozens wounded, including children. He thanked Magyar for his comments, calling the summons an 'important message'.
The move marks a significant shift in Hungary's stance towards Moscow, following years of close relations under former leader Viktor Orbán. Magyar, who defeated Orbán in April, has vowed to undo much of his legacy, focusing on alleged corruption.
