Greg Davies Teases 'The Cleaner' Isn't Over Yet

Greg Davies, the creator and star of the beloved BBC sitcom The Cleaner, has teased that the show is not finished yet, hinting at a major update for fans. Appearing on The One Show on Wednesday, the Taskmaster star revealed that he is working on something new for the series, though he remained tight-lipped about the details.

What Is The Cleaner About?

Based on a German comedy, The Cleaner premiered in 2021 and follows Paul 'Wicky' Wickstead, a crime scene cleaner played by Davies. The show explores Wicky's interactions with various people he meets through his unique line of work, often in unusual and humorous situations. Guest stars have included Helena Bonham Carter, David Mitchell, Ruth Madeley, and Layton Williams.

The BBC synopsis teases: 'After CSI have done their stuff, the cleaner mops up the grisly remains. For Wicky, a bloodbath and the pub is all in a day's work.'

Fans Hail It as 'Perfect British Comedy'

The series has been widely praised by audiences and critics alike. One fan described it as 'one of the best shows in recent years,' while another wrote: 'Haven't laughed so much in a long time. Just happened upon this little gem. Was in stitches within minutes…brilliant!'

Another viewer added: 'Blasted through all episodes, and this was a little gem to find.' The show has been called 'unexpectedly quirky and original,' with one fan stating: 'I laughed so hard that I had to pause the show to collect myself as I was losing the dialogue. Greg Davies is a comic genius.'

What Did Greg Davies Say?

Speaking on The One Show, Davies said: 'I've been told I'm not allowed to say much, but all I can tell you is, it's not over. The Cleaner is not finished, we're working on something.' He added: 'I'll be writing, yes, but I am not allowed to tell you what form it's in. Something is happening, I'm writing it. I'm chuffed that Wicky is coming back.'

Davies previously reflected on why fans have connected with the show and its protagonist. He told the BBC: 'Well, it's not for me to presume they did but what I like about the character is that in many ways he is quite innocent, almost childlike. He has settled into a very straightforward personal life but does a job that is constantly challenging that.'

He continued: 'He is forced to consider things about life that, left to his own devices he's probably brushed under the carpet. Rarely does Wicky leave a crime scene without having learned something.'

Davies also noted: 'I love that each week is a new adventure for him. He is challenged by eccentric characters with colourful lives. It's really nice to work intensely with a small cast week on week and it may seem petty but I like that, regardless of the guest actors illustrious careers, I'm always the tallest person on camera.'

What's Next for The Cleaner?

While Davies has not confirmed whether the return will be a fourth season, a special, or another format, fans can rest assured that more of Wicky's adventures are on the way. The first three seasons are currently available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
