Game of Thrones Spin-Off Production Suspended After Severe Flooding in Spain

Fans of the Game of Thrones universe may face a longer wait for the next chapter of the epic fantasy saga. HBO's acclaimed spin-off series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, has been forced to pause filming for its highly anticipated second season due to extreme weather conditions in Spain.

Production Grinds to a Halt on Gran Canaria

According to reports from Atlantico Hoy and the Express, production on the island of Gran Canaria has been suspended after severe flooding submerged portions of the set. The series, which is based on George R.R. Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg novels, stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan 'Dunk' the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell as his squire, Aegon 'Egg' Targaryen.

The filming location, described as a "pristine and spectacular landscape on the summit of Gran Canaria", had been contractually secured from February 23rd to May 15th. However, substantial winter rainfall caused water levels in the Las Niñas Dam to rise to their highest point in 15 years, leading to the reservoir bursting its banks and flooding the area.

Relocation and Delays Expected

The production team is now compelled to relocate to mainland Spain, as a thorough cleanup of the submerged site is required once water levels recede. This unexpected disruption has raised several uncertainties:

  • How long the filming postponement will last
  • Whether script revisions will be necessary to accommodate the change in location
  • The impact on the overall production timeline

Initially, there was confusion that the fourth season of another Game of Thrones spin-off, House of the Dragon, had been affected, but this has since been corrected. House of the Dragon continues its production schedule separately, with its third season set to premiere this June and a fourth season anticipated in 2028.

What This Means for Fans

While A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season two is scheduled for release in 2027, no precise date has been confirmed. Fans should anticipate significant delays in further announcements regarding the forthcoming instalment. The first season, which launched in January of this year with six episodes, received enthusiastic praise from both audiences and critics, heightening expectations for the second season.

The series remains available for streaming on HBO Max, Sky, and NOW, offering fans a chance to revisit the adventures of Dunk and Egg while awaiting news on the resumption of production. As the production team navigates these challenges, the resilience of the Game of Thrones franchise continues to be tested by real-world elements as dramatic as those in its fictional realms.
