In a significant development concluding a ten-year legal saga, Lebanese authorities have freed Hannibal Gadhafi, the son of the late Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, after he posted a substantial bail.
A Decade in Detention Ends
Hannibal Gadhafi was released on Monday, 10th November 2025, following the completion of necessary paperwork, as confirmed by his lawyer and security officials. His release brings an end to a ten-year detention in Lebanon, where he was held on allegations of withholding crucial information concerning the disappearance of a prominent Lebanese cleric, Imam Moussa al-Sadr.
Path to Freedom
The pivotal move came after Lebanese judicial officials took two key steps earlier last week. First, they officially lifted the travel ban that had been imposed on Gadhafi. Secondly, they agreed to a reduction of his bail amount, which was ultimately set at $900,000. His lawyer, Charbel Milad al-Khoury, verified to the Associated Press that the bail was paid, facilitating the release on Monday evening.
Two security officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity in line with standard regulations, independently confirmed that Gadhafi had been set free. This case has long been a sensitive and complex issue in the strained diplomatic relations between Lebanon and Libya.
