France's government announced on Sunday the release of Camilo Castro, a French-Chilean national who had been detained in Venezuela for four months. Foreign minister Jean-Noël Barrot confirmed on X that Castro was being flown back to France, crediting French diplomacy for securing his release.
President Emmanuel Macron also expressed relief, stating: 'France sometimes advances quietly, but always with determination and composure: That is how we protect our own.'
According to Amnesty International, Castro, a 41-year-old yoga teacher residing in Colombia, went missing in June after crossing into Venezuela in what he intended to be a brief trip to extend his Colombian visa.
