Nigel Barker Reflects on Show's Authenticity and Evolution

In an appearance on ITV's This Morning with hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary, Nigel Barker discussed his role in the series and his expectations for the documentary's reception. Barker, who joined the show in its second cycle, recalled how America's Next Top Model quickly became a cult hit, with everyone in the fashion industry tuning in.

"I think everybody in the fashion industry was watching America’s Next Top Model, at least for cycle one, and it was already becoming a cult phenomenon, even back then," Barker shared. "Everybody was talking about it… we were also laughing at it too," he added, noting that while some aspects were "ridiculous," they left viewers fascinated.

Barker emphasized the show's initial authenticity, attributing it to his own unconventional entry into the industry. He explained that he was initially brought on as a photographer for one episode, which quickly evolved into a permanent judging role. "There was a real authenticity, and that’s what reality television should be," he said, highlighting how this connection contributed to the show's success.

Addressing Controversial Moments and Extreme Elements

When questioned about the show's darker moments, such as race-switching experiments, compulsory cosmetic changes, and drastic transformations, Barker acknowledged that the series became more extreme over time. He linked this shift to the early 2000s television landscape, which included shows like Survivor and a trend toward more outrageous content.

"It certainly started to take on a life of its own, things got more extreme, that’s for sure," Barker stated. "We were also very much about creating television, the same old didn’t really work." He defended the creative choices, explaining that they were based on real events in the fashion world but condensed into one show for maximum impact.

No Worries Over Documentary Release

When asked if he was concerned about the documentary's revelations, Barker confidently replied, "No, I’m not worried." He revealed that he had already seen the series and explained its origins: it initially stemmed from Miss J's desire to create a documentary about his own life, which expanded to include Barker and Jay Manuel over six months of discussions.

The documentary's synopsis teases a deep dive into the show's legacy, promising to examine body shaming, off-camera drama, and infamous photoshoots. As Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model becomes available for streaming, it reignites conversations about the ethics and impact of reality television, while former participants like Nigel Barker remain steadfast in their perspectives.
