UK Foreign Office Issues Urgent Bahrain Travel Warning Amid Escalating Middle East Conflict
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued a stark warning against all but essential travel to Bahrain following a series of missile attacks and drone strikes in the capital city of Manama. This advisory comes as the conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran intensifies across the Middle East, posing significant security risks to the region.
Escalating Violence and Security Threats in Bahrain
Suspected Iranian drone strikes have targeted a high-rise building in Manama, with additional blasts reported throughout the city over recent days. The situation deteriorated further when the US Navy's 5th Fleet service centre in Bahrain was subjected to a missile attack on Saturday. Several residential buildings in the capital have also been struck, heightening concerns for civilian safety.
This escalation coincides with Israel launching a wave of missile and drone attacks on Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs of Beirut in Lebanon on Monday, accompanied by evacuation orders. The broadening conflict has created a volatile security environment across multiple Middle Eastern nations.
Current FCDO Travel Advice for Bahrain
The FCDO's travel advisory against all but essential travel to Bahrain took effect on 28 February and remains current as of 2 March. For British nationals already in the country, the guidance is unequivocal: shelter in place immediately.
"Remain indoors in a secure location, avoid all travel and follow instructions from the local authorities," the FCDO states emphatically. The office strongly recommends that British nationals register their presence in Bahrain with the UK government to receive critical updates and emergency communications.
Practical Safety Measures and Preparedness
The FCDO provides detailed guidance for those affected by the crisis, including:
- Reading the "If you're affected by a crisis abroad" guidance for emergency supply recommendations
- Following instructions from local authorities without delay
- Signing up for FCDO Travel Advice email alerts
- Monitoring both local and international media for real-time information
- Avoiding areas near security or military facilities
- Regularly reviewing departure plans and ensuring travel documents remain current
For those advised to take shelter, the FCDO recommends seeking interior stairwells or rooms with minimal external walls and windows for additional protection.
Transport Disruption and Travel Alternatives
Bahrain International Airport has temporarily suspended all flight operations due to the closure of Bahraini airspace. Flight tracking data confirms that all departures have been cancelled, with passengers advised to monitor official airport and airline channels for updates.
For holidaymakers with booked travel to the region, the FCDO advises consulting travel providers about cancellation options. Under the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018, travellers may be entitled to full refunds if there has been a "significant change at your destination" before departure.
Crucially, travelling against FCDO advice could invalidate travel insurance policies, leaving individuals financially exposed in case of emergency. The FCDO emphasises that regional escalation has created both security risks and substantial travel disruption throughout the Middle East.
