Euphoria Season 3 Premieres Amidst Off-Screen Drama and Cast Changes
After a four-year hiatus, the highly anticipated return of Euphoria is finally here, with fans eagerly awaiting the fates of the East Highland High School students as the season three premiere airs this Sunday. The HBO drama, known for its raw and graphic portrayals of teenage life, has captivated audiences with its intense storylines, but the off-screen controversies have often rivalled the on-screen drama.
What to Expect in Season Three
The new season features a significant time jump, shifting focus to the former high school students as they navigate young adulthood. Creator Sam Levinson has revealed that Rue Bennett, played by Zendaya, will be in Mexico, working as a drug smuggler to repay her dealer, Laurie. Meanwhile, Cassie and Nate are engaged and living in the suburbs, Jules is pursuing art school, Maddy works at a Hollywood talent agency, and Lexi has secured a job as an assistant to a showrunner.
The supporting cast, including Maude Apatow, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, Hunter Schafer, and Alexa Demie, continues to delve into their characters' complex backstories, offering viewers a deeper glimpse into their lives.
Cast Departures and Tragic Losses
Season three will see several notable absences from the cast. Barbie Ferreira, who played Kat, announced her departure in 2022 amid rumours of a feud with showrunner Sam Levinson, though she clarified it was a mutual decision. Storm Reid and Nika King will not return due to scheduling conflicts, while Austin Abrams and Algee Smith are also absent.
Tragically, Angus Cloud cannot reprise his role as Fez after his accidental overdose in 2023, marking a sombre note for the series.
Off-Screen Feuds and Controversies
The premiere event was not without its drama, as Zendaya and Sydney Sweeney sparked rumours of a feud with a frosty red carpet appearance. Social media buzzed with speculation, citing past tensions over Tom Holland and political differences. Additionally, Natasha Lyonne faced scrutiny after an incident on a flight following the premiere, where she was asked to deplane for not following safety instructions.
Behind the scenes, Zendaya and Sam Levinson are reported to have a strained relationship, partly due to Levinson's focus on the controversial show The Idol, which allegedly delayed Euphoria scripts and caused frustration for the star.
Looking Ahead
Euphoria season three promises to deliver the same cutting-edge storytelling that has defined the series, but with a mature twist as the characters evolve into adulthood. Despite the off-screen challenges, fans are set for an explosive return, with the premiere airing on HBO at 9pm ET/PT on Sunday, April 13, and in the UK on Sky Atlantic at 2am on Monday, April 14.
