China Warns UK Over Carrier Strike Group in South China Sea

China has issued a warning to the UK's Carrier Strike Group, led by HMS Queen Elizabeth, as it enters the contested South China Sea. The Chinese government has stated that the People's Liberation Army Navy is at a high state of combat readiness and has cautioned against any 'improper acts' by the British naval force.

The Royal Navy has been conducting exercises with the Singaporean navy, and Britain's Defence Secretary Ben Wallace has indicated plans to carry out a Freedom of Navigation exercise in the region. China claims much of the South China Sea as its own, despite a 2016 international court ruling against its claims, and has been building artificial islands and runways near neighbouring states' waters.

Analysts suggest that while China is not seeking a direct confrontation with a major US ally, it will make its intentions clear. A repeat of the 2018 incident when HMS Albion was shadowed by a Chinese warship from 200 metres away is considered likely if the UK conducts freedom of navigation exercises.

China has been holding extensive military exercises in the region, practising beach assaults, which has raised concerns about potential preparations for an invasion of Taiwan. The Chinese embassy in London has stated that the threat to freedom of navigation comes from deploying a carrier strike group to the region and flexing naval muscles.

Despite the strong rhetoric, experts believe China's actions are calibrated to avoid triggering a shooting war. The deployment of HMS Queen Elizabeth is part of the UK's broader strategy to play a more prominent role in global security, as outlined in the government's Integrated Review.
