Lindsay and Craig Foreman, a British couple jailed in Iran on espionage charges, are at risk of starvation after prison guards reportedly abandoned their posts amid US and Israeli airstrikes. The couple, both 53, were arrested in January 2025 and sentenced to 10 years in prison last month, charges they deny.
They are held in Evin prison, a notorious facility for political prisoners in Tehran, which has been hit by extensive strikes over the past four days. Their family last heard from them on Monday, reporting explosions and blown-out windows.
Lindsay's son, Joe Bennett, said he fears they could starve as food and water supplies dwindle, and they face danger from stray explosions or bullets. Reports indicate prison officials have left Evin, with the wife of another prisoner describing the situation as 'critical' and food scarce.
The family has urged the UK and US governments to prioritise the couple's safety and call for their release. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper previously called the sentence 'appalling', while the couple's son implored authorities to act.
