130,000 British Nationals Register Presence in Middle East Amid Iran-US Conflict
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has disclosed that 130,000 British nationals have now registered their presence in the Middle East, as the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States and its allies triggers widespread airspace closures across the region.
Unprecedented Numbers and Rapidly Evolving Situation
Addressing Members of Parliament, Cooper described the scenario as "a very fast-moving situation" characterized by "unprecedented numbers of British nationals in the region." The Foreign Secretary emphasized the critical importance of the Register Your Presence Programme, which enables the Foreign Office to locate individuals and disseminate essential updates and guidance.
"As of this morning, 130,000 British nationals have now signed up to the Register Your Presence Programme, which is vital to the Foreign Office’s ability to know where people are and to provide updates and advice," Cooper stated.
Major Flight Disruptions and Government Response
The hostilities have resulted in significant airspace closures throughout the Middle East, causing major disruptions to commercial flights. Cooper noted that airspace remains shut in many affected countries, severely limiting travel options for stranded citizens.
In response, the British government is actively coordinating with regional partners and airlines to facilitate evacuations. Cooper confirmed ongoing discussions with counterparts, including recent communications with the United Arab Emirates, which is providing substantial support and assisting with departures as conditions permit.
Charter Flight from Muscat and Priority for Vulnerable Individuals
A key component of the evacuation strategy involves a Government charter flight scheduled to depart from Muscat, Oman, in the coming days. This flight will prioritize vulnerable British nationals, ensuring those most at risk receive immediate assistance.
"We are also working with airlines on increasing capacity out of Muscat for British nationals, with priority for vulnerable nationals, and a Government charter flight will fly from Muscat in the coming days, prioritising vulnerable nationals," Cooper explained.
However, she cautioned that British nationals currently in Oman must await direct contact from the Foreign Office regarding evacuation options, underscoring the necessity of official coordination to manage the complex logistics safely.
Continuous Support and Regional Coordination
The Foreign Office is operating around the clock to support British citizens affected by the crisis. Cooper reiterated the government's commitment to providing continuous assistance, leveraging diplomatic channels to navigate the challenging circumstances.
"We will continue to work 24/7 on supporting British nationals in the region," she affirmed, highlighting the relentless efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of all registered individuals amidst the escalating geopolitical tensions.
