UK and Allies Tracked Three Russian Submarines in North Atlantic for a Month
Defence Secretary John Healey has disclosed that the United Kingdom, in collaboration with Norway and other allied nations, conducted a month-long operation to monitor three Russian submarines in the North Atlantic. This revelation comes at a time of heightened tensions and increased Russian naval activity in the region.
Increased Russian Activity in the Atlantic
During a press conference held at Downing Street on Thursday, Mr Healey emphasised that while global attention has been focused on the Middle East crisis, the UK and its partners have been actively responding to what he described as "increased Russian activity" in the Atlantic waters north of the UK. He stated that this operation was a critical demonstration of the UK's commitment to regional security and deterrence.
Details of the Submarine Tracking Operation
The tracked vessels included a Russian Akula-class nuclear-powered attack submarine and two specialised submarines from Russia's Main Directorate of Deep-Sea Research, commonly known as GUGI. These GUGI submarines are part of a deep-sea research programme operated by the Russian Ministry of Defence, often associated with covert intelligence-gathering missions.
Mr Healey confirmed that he deployed UK armed forces to track and deter any potential malign activities by these submarines. The operation involved a Royal Navy warship and Royal Air Force P8 aircraft, working alongside allied forces to ensure continuous, 24/7 surveillance of the Russian vessels.
Outcome and Strategic Implications
The Defence Secretary reported that the Akula-class submarine eventually retreated to its home base after being closely monitored throughout its presence. Meanwhile, the two GUGI submarines were tracked in and around wider UK waters before they also departed, heading back north. Mr Healey highlighted that the operation successfully exposed the attempted secret mission, sending a clear message to President Putin that such movements are not covert.
He stated: "Our armed forces left them in no doubt that they were being monitored, that their movements were not covert, as President Putin planned, and that their attempted secret operation had been exposed."
The month-long operation has now concluded, but it underscores the ongoing strategic challenges posed by Russian naval manoeuvres in the North Atlantic. This incident highlights the importance of international cooperation and vigilance in maintaining maritime security and countering potential threats in allied waters.
