The United Kingdom is dispatching military experts and equipment to Belgium to help counter a series of disruptive drone incursions believed to be orchestrated by Russia. This move to strengthen European airspace security was confirmed by the UK's new head of the armed forces.
Military Assistance Following Airspace Violations
Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton announced the deployment after his Belgian counterpart formally requested assistance. The decision, agreed with Defence Secretary John Healey, comes in direct response to drones being spotted near critical infrastructure. These incidents, which occurred near Zaventem airport and several military bases, led to temporary closures and disrupted approximately 3,000 passengers.
Sir Richard stated it was "plausible" that Russia was behind the incursions, a suspicion shared by Belgian security services and Germany, although the source has not been officially confirmed.
