Reform UK Calls for Tasers for All Police in Glasgow
Reform UK Wants Tasers for All Glasgow Police

Reform UK has called for all frontline police officers in Glasgow to be equipped with Tasers, claiming the city has become 'lawless' under the Scottish National Party (SNP). The party argues that 'mass illegal migration' is pushing Scotland's largest city to 'breaking point and anarchy'.

Councillor Thomas Kerr's Statement

Thomas Kerr, a Glasgow councillor who defected from the Conservatives to Reform UK and is now standing for election to the Scottish Parliament, stated that the city has 'become lawless with a rapid rise in rapes and sexual assaults'. He made the remarks while campaigning alongside Reform UK's Scottish leader, Malcolm Offord.

Reform UK's Policing Proposals

The party wants all frontline officers to be issued with Tasers, noting that currently only around 2,000 officers in Scotland are authorised to use them. They argue that a nationwide rollout would protect both the public and police, citing 7,159 assaults on police officers and staff in 2024-25 — equivalent to nearly 20 attacks per day.

Reform UK also proposes recruiting an additional 1,000 officers and ending police involvement in mental health call-outs, which they believe should be handled by medical professionals.

Criticism of Police Station Closures

Speaking outside the former Castlemilk police station in Glasgow, which is boarded up and for sale, Lord Offord criticised the closure of six police stations across the city. 'Why would you take policing out of local communities?' he asked. 'We want to get these places reopened again, recruit another 1,000 police, and give them Tasers because there is real public disorder out there.'

Lord Offord emphasised that communities across Scotland deserve to feel safe, and that Police Scotland must have the powers, resources, and backing to act decisively against crime. 'We will always support firm but fair policing — restoring order where it has broken down and making clear that the rule of law stands for everyone,' he said.

Reaction from Scottish Liberal Democrats

Daniel Khan-O'Malley, the Scottish Liberal Democrats' lead candidate for Glasgow, dismissed the claims of lawlessness. 'The idea that Glasgow is descending into lawlessness and anarchy will come as something of a surprise to those out enjoying the sunshine today,' he said. He argued that the city needs investment in high streets, affordable housing, and cost-of-living measures, not more heavily armed police.
