UK's First Twins with Different Dads Reveal How They Found Out
UK Twins with Different Dads Share Their Discovery Story

Michelle and Lavinia Osbourne, the UK's first recorded case of twins with different fathers, have spoken publicly about their extraordinary discovery, calling themselves "miracles." In a new series of BBC Radio 4's The Gift, the sisters shared their story with host Jenny Kleeman, detailing how DNA tests revealed they are half-sisters despite being twins.

The phenomenon, known as heteropaternal superfecundation, occurs when multiple eggs are released during the same menstrual cycle and fertilised by sperm from different men. Fewer than 20 cases have been documented globally, with Michelle and Lavinia being the first in the UK.

A Shocking Discovery

Michelle decided to take an at-home DNA test due to "deep down doubts" about her paternity. She explained: "I saw this picture and just thought, you don't even look anything like me… There's no similarity there… So I bought myself a kit." The results arrived on the same day their mother died, 14 February 2022, revealing that James, the man Michelle believed was her father, was not. Instead, her biological father was a man named Alex.

After contacting Alex's family, Michelle learned he had struggled with alcoholism and drug addiction and was homeless. She also met a new cousin. When she showed photos to Lavinia, Lavinia initially thought Alex might be her father too, but seeing the pictures made her doubt. She took her own DNA test and discovered that neither James nor Alex was her father.

Finding Their Fathers

While Lavinia was not initially interested in identifying her father, Michelle was determined to find answers. She eventually tracked down Arthur, who Lavinia described as "a little bit nervous" but with "an exuberant character, like me." Lavinia and Arthur now meet several times a month, and she said: "I feel like I've found a place to belong, and that place is with my dad."

The twins do not know if their mother was aware they had different fathers. However, Arthur implied she knew he fathered one of the twins, as she contacted him after discovering she was pregnant.

A Story of Resilience

Reflecting on their journey, Lavinia said: "The fact that Michelle and I survived whatever that process was and are here to tell the tale - we're miracles. We're always going to have a closeness that can't be broken." Michelle added: "I think Lavinia and I have both equally gained more than we could ever, ever have thought of or conceived, ever. I myself don't feel like I've lost anything. She's my twin sister. Nothing takes away from that."

The episode was dedicated to their mother, who had a difficult life. Born in Jamaica, she moved to England at age five and was "in and out of foster care" due to an abusive stepfather. Lavinia said: "We could have maybe found our fathers and had more clarity about who we were earlier in life. But I forgive my mum for everything."

The Gift explores the extraordinary truths that can emerge from at-home DNA tests like Ancestry, MyHeritage, and 23andMe. Michelle and Lavinia's story is told over the first two episodes, available on BBC Sounds.
