The eighth annual Alex Lindsay Cup charity football tournament will take place this Sunday, June 28, at Calderglen High School pitches in East Kilbride, raising funds and awareness for mental health and suicide prevention.
Event Details and Background
Kicking off at 10am, the seven-a-side tournament remembers Alexander Iain Bonomy-Lindsay, an 18-year-old Motherwell FC fan who tragically took his own life in July 2018. The event has raised tens of thousands of pounds for mental health charities over the years.
Alex's mother Jill said: "We are looking forward to the eighth Alex Lindsay Cup football tournament. What started out as a memorial tournament eight years ago has developed into a significant event which supports our charity Adored; supporting suicide prevention."
Charity Adored and Its Impact
The charity Adored was set up by Alex's family in the months after the first tournament in January 2019. Inspired by The Stone Roses song "I Wanna Be Adored," the cause focuses on mental health support and saving young lives.
Jill added: "The programme of mental health support, resilience, life skills and strategies, delivered by Allan Syme from No Limits Coaching, has been piloted in each of the secondary schools in East Kilbride and with resounding success this programme has now been endorsed by South Lanarkshire Council’s Inclusion’s Orbit outreach programme."
Adored is now part of a wider initiative with other charities and local businesses to support several learning communities across South Lanarkshire. All funds raised go towards educational programmes, wellbeing retreats, and one-to-one support sessions.
Family Fun and Community Support
The event promises family-friendly activities including face painting, raffles, food and drinks, demonstrations from Soul Suites, and mental health support stalls from Men With Issues and No Limits Coaching.
Jill urged the community to attend: "So if you can, come along to Calderglen High School pitches on Sunday, June 28, kick-off at 10am – family fun with face painting, raffles, food and drinks, demonstrations from Soul Suites and mental health support stalls from Men With Issues and No Limits Coaching. Help us help the young people of East Kilbride. Let’s hope the sun shines!"
