Trump Predicts Starmer's Resignation

Former US President Donald Trump has predicted that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer will resign, accusing him of failing on immigration and energy policy. In a post on Truth Social on Saturday, Trump wrote: 'Keir Starmer will resign as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He failed badly on two very important subjects- IMMIGRATION AND ENERGY (OPEN NORTH SEA OIL!). I wish him well! President DJT.'

Trump has repeatedly criticised Starmer for blocking oil drilling in the North Sea, recently claiming Europe was 'desperate' for oil that the UK was not supplying. In November 2025, Trump urged Starmer to deploy the army to stop illegal immigration, warning Britain 'won't have a country left' without action.

Mounting Pressure on Starmer

Pressure has been building on Starmer to step aside, with Home Secretary Yvette Cooper among senior cabinet figures believed to have advised him to leave. The prime minister is reportedly consulting his family and may announce an exit plan as early as Monday, according to sources. If he resigns, Britain would see its seventh prime minister in ten years.

Until recently, No 10 insisted Starmer would fight any leadership challenge. However, the number of Labour MPs calling for him to go has now topped 100—just under a quarter of the party's MPs—including some who signed a letter against a contest last month.

Burnham Warned Not to Become Leader 'by Default'

Former Tory Prime Minister Rishi Sunak warned Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, seen as a likely successor, not to become leader 'by default.' In the Sunday Times, Sunak wrote that Burnham would not have more power than on his first day, and being a 'better communicator' would not ensure success. 'It is vital he has a clear and achievable plan for what he wants to do in those opening hours,' Sunak added.

Labour grandees have also spoken out. Former home secretary Alan Johnson said Starmer should step aside, and Lord Falconer said he has 'no authority' because it is assumed Burnham will replace him.

Starmer's Vow to Stay

On Friday, after Burnham won the Makerfield by-election, Starmer vowed not to walk away from his post. But pressure has escalated over the weekend, with the by-election loss seen as a trigger for the growing rebellion.
