An SNP-led council has banned workers from displaying Scotland flags after the success of the men's team at the World Cup. Midlothian Council issued an edict blocking staff from wearing team shirts in a bid to promote an "inclusive" work environment.
Labour Leader Criticizes Ban
Labour councillor Derek Milligan blasted the decision: "At a time when people around the world are coming together to celebrate the spirit of international sport, this decision by the SNP run council has been met with real anger by many staff members. They believe that supporting their national team is a way to foster camaraderie and celebrate shared pride. They feel that the council's stance is simply political correctness gone daft rather than encouraging team spirit and national pride."
World Cup Celebrations
Tartan Army members have received international praise for their conduct in the World Cup in North America. Boston, where the team defeated Haiti in their first match, was awash with Saltires and the famous blue shirt. The exploits of manager Steve Clarke's team have also gripped the country, with a special bank holiday held after the Haiti game.
However, an email from Midlothian Council has clamped down on staff showing their appreciation for the national team. It stated: "With the Men's World Cup now underway—and following Scotland's success at the weekend—we know many colleagues will be keen to show their support. We're pleased to see the enthusiasm, but as a reminder, our workplace needs to remain inclusive and welcoming for everyone. We have a diverse workforce and displays such as flags, team shirts or other football paraphernalia can sometimes be open to different interpretations or cause unintended offence. To ensure we maintain a professional and neutral environment for all, colleagues are reminded of the appropriate dress code and not to display flags, wear team shirts, or bring football-related items into the workplace during this period. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation."
Call for Common Sense
Milligan said: "While respecting workplace policies it is important that on special occasions such as the world cup that common sense is applied. Hopefully the SNP led administration will realise this disgraceful decision is political correctness gone mad and staff be allowed to find a balanced approach that allows for celebrating national pride in a respectful manner."
Council's Response
A Midlothian Council spokesman said: "We're just as proud as the rest of the nation Scotland is in the World Cup. We're just asking staff to be mindful we have a diverse workforce and displays such as flags, team shirts or other football paraphernalia can sometimes be open to different interpretations or cause unintended offence. Our schools are running World Cup themed events, projects and initiatives; our school catering teams are promoting World Cup themed menus, with decorative bunting; and our leisure centres are embracing the occasion with World Cup themed bunting and related activities. This is all absolutely acceptable."
