Veteran radio presenter Reverend Jay Bacik passed away on Friday at the age of 82. He was widely recognised for his years behind the microphone on 2GB and 2CH during the 1990s and early 2000s, alongside his religious ministry and community work.
Throughout his broadcasting career, Bacik earned a reputation as a warm, energetic, and often humorous broadcaster. His death was confirmed by New South Wales Opposition Leader Kellie Sloane on Wednesday. Speaking to 2GB host Ben Fordham, Sloane expressed her deep sadness at the news.
“He was a larger-than-life character. He would bring people into a cause with great passion and he was impossible to say no to,” Sloane said. She added that Bacik was renowned for his “cheeky sense of humour” and that she would fondly remember his “absolute passion and care for people.”
Over his long radio career, Bacik frequently filled in for fellow broadcaster Reverend Bill Crews, becoming a trusted voice for listeners and a regular stand-in on air. Crews paid tribute, reflecting on both Bacik’s professionalism on air and his generosity behind the scenes. “He would ring me up and say, ‘when are you going next? Take time off’,” Crews recalled.
During his tenure, Bacik interviewed many of Australia’s most famous figures, including then-Prime Minister John Howard in 2000. Crews described him as a “remarkable character” who was always looking to help those in need. “He had a pretty tough life himself, he was a pretty tough sort of guy. He was kind, generous and outgoing,” Crews added.
Beyond broadcasting, Bacik was ordained in 1969 and served in ministries across Wollongong, Telopea, and Crows Nest. He also spent nearly 15 years running Life Education and was involved with multiple boards, including Drug Free Australia, Diabetes Australia, and the NSW Parole Board. His influence extended into infrastructure, having helped fund the Northside Community Church in Crows Nest, where his funeral will be held later this week.
He is survived by his wife Dianne and three children: Anna, Bradley, and Michael.
