Chancellor Rachel Reeves has confirmed she will not block Nigel Farage's request to resign as an MP, paving the way for a by-election in his Clacton constituency. Farage, the Reform UK leader, announced his intention to trigger the contest, framing it as a "people versus the establishment" fight amid scrutiny over gifts and support he has received.
By-Election Boycott and Unusual Opponent
The main Westminster parties are boycotting the election, leaving comedy candidate Count Binface as Farage's highest-profile opponent. Technically, MPs cannot resign; they must be appointed to the stewardship of the Chiltern Hundreds or the Manor of Northstead, symbolic roles that disqualify them from the Commons.
Reeves stated: "I will accept Nigel Farage’s request to be appointed Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead. It is a farce and a desperate distraction, and the people of Clacton deserve better. But if he wants to spend the summer arguing with a bin, I won’t stop him."
Liberal Democrats' Objection
The Liberal Democrats had urged Reeves to block the process, arguing Farage should not be allowed to resign until a parliamentary investigation into undeclared donations concludes. However, Reeves dismissed these calls, allowing Farage to proceed with the by-election.
