FIFA has confirmed it will investigate the Argentina players' display of a banner claiming the Falkland Islands are Argentine following their semi-final victory over England. Meanwhile, medical concerns have been raised over Canadian wildfire smoke potentially affecting the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina on Sunday.
FIFA Statement on Falklands Banner
FIFA issued a statement regarding the banner unfurled by Lionel Scaloni's squad after their 2-1 win over England. The statement read: "As is standard procedure, Fifa's independent disciplinary committee is currently assessing the match reports and considering the relevant circumstances before deciding on potential further steps based on the Fifa disciplinary code."
This is not the first time Argentina has faced sanctions over such a banner. In 2014, Argentina's football association was fined £20,000 by FIFA for displaying a similar message before a friendly against Slovenia.
Wildfire Smoke Health Warning for Final
Dr Vin Gupta, a lung specialist, has warned that smoke from Canadian wildfires could create hazardous conditions for fans attending the World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. He stated: "It not only is going to be terrible, terrible air quality. It's hot, and that can cause an extreme amount of stress on the heart. That is a very powerful and dangerous one-two punch to the human body. It's going to be critical to maintain core body temperatures as low as possible."
Harry Kane Reacts to Semi-Final Defeat
England captain Harry Kane took to social media after the loss to Argentina, expressing his disappointment. He wrote: "No words are big enough right now to overcome this empty feeling in the stomach. We were close, really close to another final but it wasn't enough. We've given everything over these last 7 weeks and to fall short is hard to take!"
Kane added: "I know the expectations are high and rightly so, we've been knocking on the door for 8 years now but again are missing that final piece of the jigsaw! That's where we have to go away, process it and find a way to get better."
England's Third-Place Play-Off
England will face France in the third-place play-off on Saturday at 10pm in Miami, before the final on Sunday at 8pm at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
