Tom Holland has said that giving up alcohol has been instrumental in his recent career success. The 29-year-old actor, best known for playing Spider-Man, quit drinking in early 2022 after taking part in Dry January and realising he had become “obsessed” with alcohol.
Speaking at his second annual Bero Padel Classic in Los Angeles, Holland told USA Today that his career has “blossomed” since he stopped drinking. “I don’t know how much of that would’ve come to fruition had I still been drinking,” he said. The actor admitted that alcohol was “ultimately really getting in the way of my professional life.”
Holland explained that the stress of acting, combined with drinking, compounded his problems. “Since getting rid of the booze and feeling more like myself and waking up clear-headed every day... I just feel so much more confident in myself as who I am as a person,” he said.
The actor, who will reprise his role as Spider-Man opposite Zendaya this summer in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, has spoken openly about his journey. He previously said on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast that he initially struggled to stop drinking, finding that he was “really struggling” after two months off alcohol and worrying that he might have a problem.
Holland decided to quit until his birthday in June to prove to himself that he did not have a problem. By the time he reached that deadline, he said he was “the happiest I’ve ever been in my life.” In 2024, he launched his own non-alcoholic beer brand, Bero.
