Lauren Laverne Diagnosed with Rare Blood Disorder

BBC Radio 6 host and television presenter Lauren Laverne has revealed she has been diagnosed with a rare blood and bone marrow disorder called smouldering myeloma. The announcement comes after her battle with cancer in 2024.

Laverne Shares Health News on Instagram

Laverne, 48, took to Instagram on Friday, July 17, 2026, to share the news with her followers. In a statement, she wrote: "Hi. So – personal news. I’m quite a private person by nature but am sharing this as one of the many things I’ve learned after going through health challenges in recent years is that talking about this stuff helps people."

She continued: "I’ve been diagnosed with something called smouldering myeloma. (yes that is a weird name and no I’ve never heard of it either). It’s an asymptomatic blood and bone marrow disorder that in some people can develop into blood cancer. Thankfully for me the risk of this happening in my case is pretty low. At the moment I feel OK and don’t need treatment."

Low Risk and No Treatment Required

Laverne emphasized that her condition is being closely monitored due to her cancer history. "Most people my age who have it have no idea – it tends to be cancer survivors like me who are diagnosed early as we’re so carefully monitored," she added.

Smouldering myeloma is a precursor to multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, but it does not always progress. According to the NHS, around 10% of people with smouldering myeloma develop active myeloma each year. Laverne's statement suggests her personal risk is significantly lower than average.
