An urgent health alert has been issued for popular pasta products sold at Costco over concerns they could contain ingredients posing a deadly risk to some consumers. The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued the alert for Giovanni Rana Rustic Beef Sauce & Creamy Burrata Cheese Ravioli.
The ravioli is labeled as beef and burrata but it may actually contain shrimp filling in lobster sauce due to a labeling and packaging error, posing a serious risk to people allergic to shrimp and lobster. Shrimp and lobster are both shellfish and about three percent of Americans, 8.5 million people, suffer from a shellfish allergy.
Use-by dates on the product range from May 14, 2026 to June 25, 2026. It also has the USDA inspection with Est. 44870 inside the mark. The items were shipped to Costco stores in Maryland and New Jersey.
The labeling error was discovered when FSIS was notified of two consumer complaints reporting that the beef sauce and burrata ravioli actually contained shrimp ravioli. No illnesses or adverse reactions have been reported in connection to the health alert.
A recall has not been requested because the item is no longer available for purchase but it could still be in people's freezers. The FSIS is urging consumers with shellfish allergies not to eat the product. Consumers should throw it away or return it to the place of purchase.
Symptoms of a shellfish allergy include hives, nausea, itching and life-threatening anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening allergic reaction that occurs very quickly after being exposed to an allergen. Experts estimate 150 to 200 Americans die from allergen-induced anaphylaxis every year. It triggers an extreme immune response, leading to dizziness, fainting, vomiting, trouble breathing and throat swelling. If not treated quickly with epinephrine (adrenaline), which can be administered via injection like an EpiPen or nasal spray, a person can die.
Another product sold at Costco was recalled earlier this year over possible contamination with the deadly salmonella bacteria. Costco recalled its popular Meatloaf with Mashed Yukon Potatoes and Glaze kit in nearly 20 states due to possible salmonella contamination. The recall was issued after one of Costco’s suppliers, Griffith Foods, flagged a potential contamination in an ingredient used in the meal. The specific ingredient was not disclosed and no illnesses or injuries had been reported.
