TV Crime Scenes Recreated to Recruit Detectives Amid Shortage

The University of Lincoln has unveiled a crime scene house featuring 18 iconic television and film sets, including the blood-splattered shower from Psycho and the axe-splintered bathroom door from The Shining, to recruit the next generation of detectives amid a national shortage.

The immersive set, built on campus, allows students studying forensic science to examine realistic crime scenes. It was first shown at an Open Day where prospective students were challenged to solve as many scenes as possible.

National Shortage of Detectives and Forensic Experts

The UK is currently short of over 5,000 police detectives, leading to unmanageable workloads and unsolved crimes. Additionally, there is a backlog of more than 20,000 digital devices in digital forensics, highlighting a critical need for skilled professionals.

Dr Kirsty Miller, head of the college of health and science at the University of Lincoln, said: "We are living in an age where social media and true crime have made criminal investigations fascinating to huge audiences, but real investigations depend on evidence, scientific rigour and professional judgement."

Inspiring the Next Generation

Dr Miller added: "Our Crime Scene House is designed to spark curiosity and show prospective students how those skills are developed in practice. At a time when the criminal justice system is crying out for more investigators and detectives, we’re hoping it inspires students to choose a degree that leads to a much needed and valuable career."

Vice Chancellor Professor Neal Juster commented: "We're proud to offer outstanding opportunities across a wide range of disciplines, helping students develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to build successful careers. The Crime Scene House captures that approach perfectly, it's imaginative, immersive and shows how we bring academic learning together with real-world experience to inspire the next generation of professionals."

Practical Training for Forensic Science Students

The crime scene house includes detailed recreations from popular culture, such as a bottle of red wine and other props, designed to engage students in hands-on learning. The University of Lincoln hopes this innovative approach will attract more young people to forensic science careers, addressing the pressing shortage in the criminal justice system.
