JD Vance: Antichrist may be 'walking among us' due to AI chatbots

US vice-president JD Vance has said the Antichrist may be “walking among us” and that AI chatbots are fuelling the “end times” of humanity. The fervent Catholic politician fears our world may soon be coming to an end and is partly putting the blame on the increasing human reliance on Artificial Intelligence robots.

End times speculation

In a podcast chat with Bryce Crawford, a 22-year-old evangelical Christian, Mr Vance said: “Do I think that we’re in the end times? I don’t know. There are things about the world that make me feel not shocked if the Antichrist was walking among us.”

He also described a friend whose wife had turned to an AI chatbot for counselling, only to realise it agreed with everything she wrote.

AI described as 'satanic'

Promoting his book Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith, Mr Vance added: “There’s no real human feedback; it sort of short circuits that social part of our brain where we respond to other people’s wants and needs. I think that’s kind of satanic. When you completely divorce the human from the social element that God made us for, I think that’s very bad.”

Mr Vance was briefly an evangelical Protestant as a teenager, went through a period as an atheist, and was baptised and confirmed as a Catholic in 2019.
