An explosion near a German train station in the early hours of Wednesday morning (2 September) has left two people injured.
An unidentified object exploded in a passageway at the main station in the southern city of Augsburg at around 3.15am, according to officials, causing minor injuries to two people — a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man. The German news agency dpa reported that both victims are Ukrainian citizens.
Station briefly closed after second object found
At around 8am, police discovered another suspicious object at the same location, causing them to temporarily close the transport hub for several hours.
The train station was reopened again at 10am after police confirmed the suspicious object had been identified as harmless.
"We can give the all-clear - the object we found in front of the main train station was harmless, and we have reopened the station", police spokesman Timo Kufner told The Associated Press. "The trains are running again, too."
Investigation ongoing
Explosives experts from the Bavarian state criminal police office are still investigating at the scene.
"It’s still too early to say anything about a possible motive for the overnight explosion, but we are investigating," Mr Kufner added.
Road traffic and public transportation in the vicinity of the station were disrupted in the early morning hours but later traffic was running normally again, police said.
Augsburg is a city of 308,000 residents in Bavaria, about 78 kilometres (48 miles) north-west of Munich.
