Sun safety experts have identified two areas that people commonly forget to apply suncream to, and surprisingly, they are not the ears or neck. According to specialists at Which?, the eyelids and armpits are frequently neglected, which can result in painful burns.
Eyelids Need Protection
The experts caution that individuals not wearing sunglasses must apply suncream to their eyelids for adequate protection. The skin on the eyelids is thin and sensitive, making it particularly vulnerable to UV damage.
Armpits Often Missed
Another area routinely overlooked is the armpits. The experts advise applying suncream to armpits before deodorant and reapplying if sweating. This ensures that the sunscreen is not blocked by deodorant and remains effective.
Other Commonly Missed Spots
Additional areas frequently forgotten include the lips, feet, behind the knees, heels, ankles, soles, and between the toes. The back of the hands is also often neglected. The experts emphasize that all exposed skin should be covered with at least factor 30 or 50 sunscreen.
Sun Safety Tips from the NHS
The NHS recommends avoiding direct sunlight between 11am and 3pm from March to October, when UV rays are strongest. They advise never allowing skin to burn, covering up with clothing and sunglasses, taking extra care with children, and using at least factor 30 sunscreen, reapplying regularly.
Protecting Children
Babies and young children require special attention as their skin is more sensitive than adults. Repeated sun exposure can lead to skin cancer later in life. The NHS suggests keeping children out of the sun during peak hours and using protective clothing and sunscreen.
Treating Sunburn
If sunburn occurs, the NHS recommends cooling the skin with cool water, taking a cool bath or shower, and applying soothing aftersun products like aloe vera. Painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can help reduce inflammation. Seek medical attention if feeling unwell or if the skin swells badly or blisters.
